Type Locality and Naming

At Kansay, N. Nuratau Ridge. R.R. Usmakov in 1993 (Korsakov et al., 1993).

Synonym: Kansay Suite, Кансайская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part of the section, mica-quartz, quartz-mica-sericite-chlorite slates predominate, representing metamorphosed siltstone (aleurolites) and pelites in the stilpnomelane-chlorite-muscovite subfacies.

Middle and Upper parts of the section are composed of clay-mica slates, alternating with siltstone (aleurolites), sandstones, and layers (up to 1 m) of gravelites.

Total formation thickness is more than 1000 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The conditional Vendian-Lower Cambrian age is established (by R.R. Usmakov) based on stratigraphic position between the late Riphean deposits of the Suvliksay Fm

Upper contact

The overlying Zhivachisay Fm of the Middle-Upper Cambrian, characterized by organic remains.

Regional extent

Predominantly in the western part of the N. Nuratau Ridge. It is correlated with the Khodzhaakhmet Fm and Kurghantau Fm
